Review: Pelican

Drenched in heavy red light, Pelican played a killer set for a full house at the Paradise on Friday.  To fully appreciate the type of sound this four-piece produces, it would be helpful to picture yourself floating above alien terrain with all signs pointing toward trouble.  Giant, swirling textures of dark and lonesome melody hold you in their grasp, while a persistent percussive force drives you into oblivion.  I don't think anybody even noticed that no one was singing, this wordless sermon summoned a deep blend of thoughts and emotions on its own.  Even when things were calm they were terrifying, and I liked it.  To be honest though, I might have to stare at pictures of rainbows and unicorns for while to balance out.  AAP
